Buxton School provides an exciting, fast-paced Saturday School called Shine and is open to Year 7 pupils.

The project offers fun-filled sessions including video workshops, hands-on experiments and lots of games and pupils who attend are expected to make significant improvement in their learning.
We work hard to raise funds for this project and offer this to our local community at no cost. Everything at Shine is provided to students through this fundraising campaign; including lunch, trips and prizes for regular attendance.

Pupils will gain learning support in Science, Maths and English and from September we are introducing Circus Skills to the programme which not only develops hand eye coordination, balance, confidence and teamwork; Pupils will Learn how to Learn.

In developing Shine we put careful thought into recruitment and retention of pupils.

We;

  • Ensure that staff understood the importance of “fun” in the sessions
  • Engage parental support – we tell parents that if they could work hard to persuade their child to come for the first few weeks, we were confident that they would enjoy it so much that much less persuasion would be required for the rest of the year.
  • Provide good food – healthy snacks at break, hot food at lunch
  • Create a “club” atmosphere – name badges with lanyards, stickers, reward cards
  • Incentivise attendance – including a chance to win an Ipod for 100% attendance at the end of the year
  • Exciting trips every half term, as a reward for good attendance. We go to the theatre, to Madame Tussauds, Cambridge, London Aquarium, and Thorpe Park in the summer. Where possible, we include a restaurant lunch as part of the trip.

All Year 7 pupils are welcome, but there are only 60 places, which will be given out on a first come, first served basis. Shine runs for 30 weeks during term time only and starts at 9.30 and finishes 2.30 (except on trip days when you will be informed).
